Fashion’s eternal carousel continues to spin, bringing back Y2K trends with a vengeance. We’ve witnessed the resurrection of low-rise jeans, the quirky skirt-over-pants look, and the return of slogan tees. Now, Olympic gymnastics stars Simone Biles and Jordan Chiles are reviving another blast from the past: shorts with cheeky messages across the derrière. If you’re having flashbacks to Juicy Couture or Soffe’s heyday, you’re not alone. (Feeling nostalgic yet?)
In a recent Instagram post, Biles and Chiles struck a pose on their Parisian balcony, sporting matching ensembles that screamed early 2000s meets Olympic chic. The dynamic duo donned red hot pants reminiscent of lifeguard attire, complete with white piping and “TEAM USA” emblazoned across the back. Biles paired her shorts with a sleek black sports bra, while Chiles opted for a crisp white one. Both athletes rocked slicked-back top knots, adding to the retro-athletic vibe.

Biles captioned the post with a playful nod to their patriotic ensemble and partnership: “Red, white, biles&chiles ❤️.” This twinning moment follows hot on the heels of another matchy-matchy photo op, where the pair lounged in identical bathrobes adorned with the U.S. flag and Olympic rings.
The gymnasts’ fashion statement comes on the heels of their historic performance at the Olympic Games. Biles and Chiles, along with Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade, made headlines by forming the first all-Black gymnastics podium in Olympic history, taking silver, bronze, and gold respectively in the women’s floor final.

This sporty shorts trend isn’t limited to Olympic villages, though. Celebrities have been spotted embracing athletic-inspired bottoms throughout the summer. Fashion icon Hailey Bieber has been elevating Fila shorts and Alo microshorts with edgy leather jackets and polished accessories. Meanwhile, Jennifer Lawrence has been spotted multiple times in a hybrid of boxer shorts and running shorts, proving the versatility of this comfortable yet stylish trend.

As we approach the final stretch of summer, why not take a cue from these trendsetters? Whether you’re going for gold or just aiming to stay cool, a pair of mini shorts might be just the ticket to round out your warm-weather wardrobe. Medal optional, of course.
